There are many famous coin collections and to me the most interesting are those that cover a particular theme. So of course I was very interested to read about the announcement of The Star Trek 50th anniversary coin collection last month and want to share a few details with you. None less than the Royal Canadian Mint (licensed by CBS Consumer Products) is set to introduce a range of coins showcasing the characters and imagery of Star Trek: The Original Series. The first coin, a $10 silver piece featuring Captain Kirk, was introduced to the public by actor William Shatner who brought this role to life in the series. The coin can already be purchased through the Canadian mint, online, by phone or in person at one of their stores. Some other coins that will form part of the collection are: $20 silver Star Trek Enterprise, a 1 oz. silver coin that shows a coloured engraving of the famous star ship about to land on a planet; a $20 silver Classic Scene Series which captures three iconic scenes from the most popular episodes; a the $200 Delta, gold coin in the elongated star form of the Delta Shield symbol; and a 25 cent nickel Star Trek Enterprise themed coin. Star Trek fans can compete even with us coin competitors for obsessiveness. So it looks likely that this galactic set will become one of the famous coin collections of the future!
